3 Ways to Achieve Straighter Teeth with a Smile Makeover

Wondering whether a general dentist can perform a smile makeover? Some general dentists are deciding to undergo the necessary training and education so they can offer their patients cosmetic dental options. Now dental patients have more choices when it comes to choosing the right type of dental professional to perform their smile makeover.

Why get a smile makeover

Understanding that there are different reasons for choosing a smile makeover is the first thing one needs to realize when thinking about making over their smile. For example, some people want a smile makeover because they have damaged teeth, while others will do so because their teeth are not as white as they would like them to be. Additional reasons for getting a smile makeover include having gaps between teeth, fixing a gummy smile, and straightening crooked teeth.

3 Teeth-straightening options that can be included in a smile makeover

The list below includes some of the more popular options people are choosing nowadays to straighten their teeth, as teeth-straightening is a common option for those who choose to undergo the smile makeover process. Remember that straight teeth also support a healthier mouth. While braces and clear aligners are two popular teeth-straightening options, the list only includes options that allow one's teeth to be straightened in just one or two dental appointments.

1. Dental veneers

Dental veneers are custom-made for every patient and use very thin pieces of porcelain to make crooked teeth look straighter. This straightening option is ideal for minimally crooked teeth and teeth that are misshaped. Once the veneers have been made, they are placed on a patient's teeth using special dental bonding to keep them in place. Choosing this teeth-straightening option typically requires patients to make two dental appointments.

2. Dental bonding

Dental bonding is a very versatile teeth-straightening option, as it uses a special tooth-colored composite resin material to reshape teeth in a way that makes them look straighter. This option requires patients to make an appointment with an experienced dentist, as the dentist needs to shape and contour each tooth in a way that looks natural. Once the bonding material has been applied to the teeth, a special light is used to seal the bond. This option often requires only one dental appointment.

3. Dental reshaping

Dental reshaping is also called dental contouring and is an option for those with minimally crooked teeth. This teeth-straightening option works well for teeth that are improperly shaped or teeth that are overlapping each other. A dentist must remove a small amount of a tooth's enamel in order to reshape the tooth, creating the appearance of straighter teeth. Sometimes this straightening option is combined with dental bonding. Dental reshaping generally only requires one dental appointment.
